ABCyz

FAQs

What is ABCyz?
ABCyz is a collaboratively curated show of art collectives. It is a group show of group shows, a collective of collectives, a powwow. ABCyz is about DIY, open doors and windows, open source and meeting and greeting. Read more here.

What does “ABC” stand for?
ABC is shorthand for the participating types of groups:
'A' – artist-run spaces and projects
'B' – new curatorial initiatives and not-for-profit art groups
C' – open forum for other collectives to make their projects known

What is the “yz” about?
'y' and 'z' represent the generations of young and emerging artists of today and the future.

Why are you doing this now?
It is a critical time in the art world. It is the right time both to reevaluate what is essential and to explore. ABCyz takes ideas that are afloat – DIY, open source, altermodernity – and puts them into action. We’re not only taking a snapshot of what’s happening today, but also shaping the dialogue. Come participate. Collaborate. Overlap. Inspire improvisation. Aid, abet and constructively challenge your neighbors and visitors and put your best foot forward (as straightforwardly (or not) as possible). Come for the party.

What’s the origin of ABCyz?
Our project stems from conversations among artists, curators, art patrons and art critics over the past year, who voiced a desire to bring artist initiatives together.

Is this an art fair? Is artwork for sale?
ABCyz is not an art fair in the traditional sense. It is a collaboration of like-minded people who wish to exhibit their work. Art may be for sale, but sales are not the purpose of the exhibition.
Each group will set its own sales parameters. Should someone sell a piece, ABCyz will not accept a percentage of the sale.

Who is curating the show?
ABCyz is aimed at being an inclusive show and for this reason there is not a sole curator, but an assortment of artists working together to produce something collectively. Individual groups may have a curator for their space, but there is no curator for the entire show. The organizers will help participating groups determine which of A, B or C is appropriate.

How can I attend?
ABCyz events are free and open to the public. Check the website often for updates and/or e-mail to be placed on the ABCyz mailing list.

What’s the cost?
ABCyz is not-for-profit, free and open to the public. Donate as you wish, pay what you can. Invite your neighbors and non-art-world-friends too. Donations for entry at door are suggested but are voluntary and on a sliding scale.

I want to start a similar event in my city. How do I do it?
We hope that our event in New York City will inspire others to hold similar events in their cities or metro areas. The printed materials are free and online for downloading. The project itself is proposed as open-source – in the future, anyone will be able to download a blank copy of the website and event structure info and stage a production of their own in their city. For more information about open-source access, please email us at .
